Peter Winford
Peter Winford Although my number came up in the birthday ballot for Vietnam I was able to wangle an exemption on medical grounds. I completed my Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Melbourne Uni. I was married briefly and lived in Kew. I joined Nylex Corporation as a project engineer and was fortunate to be assigned to expansion projects for Nylex in Victoria and NSW before being sent to New Zealand for a year. I spent a further 6 years establishing manufacturing facilities in Malaysia for Nylex and the Ansell Corporation. During this time I travelled extensively throughout Asia and inevitably met my second wife, Marian, a Canadian backpacking from Vancouver to Australia. We were married in Canada, spent a couple of years in Malacca before returning to Canada.
We settled on a small hobby farm in the beautiful Fraser Valley near Vancouver, I worked as a plant engineer and we had two sons. We sold the farm, moved to Vancouver and I had a succession of management positions in plastic manufacturing companies. This involved frequent travel throughout the United States and occasional trips to Europe and Japan. We lived for a time in the Okanagan region of BC where we pursued summer and winter recreation including skiing and mountain biking and boating.
I retired in 2006 and started a small contracting operation doing renovation projects in our local community of White Rock which is a bedroom community about 5 kilometers north of the border with the U.S. Marian worked with seniors for many years and we made many good friends as a result of her outgoing personality. We travelled extensively in Mexico and Asia and made regular trips to Australia to catch up with friends and family. On one trip we were hiking at Wilson`s Prom and ran into the BHS matriculating class of that year.
Sadly, Marian passed away two years ago however, my eldest son and his wife have recently had their first child (and my first grandchild) Caroline Marian. They live in Collingwood and fortuitously I had planned to visit them this October. I am looking forward to catching up with many new old friends some of whom went to Deepdene State School. I am very grateful for the excellent educational opportunities BHS provided, this is evidenced by the successful lives so many of our graduates have enjoyed.
