Anne Hawker (Jubb)
From BHS I went on to Burwood Teachers College (T.P.T.C) and was successful in gaining an appointment to Hexham P.S. in the Western District where I taught from 1965 to 1968. I met my husband, Peter, got married and had two daughters. I resigned from teaching to look after our family. In 1973 we moved to Gippsland, bought a herd of dairy cows and share- farmed. Because of the downturn in dairying soon after, I returned to teaching in 1975 and, in 1977, sold the cows and moved our family into the residence of a small rural school at Yannathan South where I taught for six years while Peter joined the Victoria Police Force. We bought a small farm at Lang Lang and, in 1983, I took on the job of shared music specialist working in seven small rural schools. I returned to study in 1984 and completed my B. Ed. and Grad. Dip. Mus. Ed. In 1986 I worked as a music support teacher in the Statewide Primary Developmental Music Program and went on to head up that program working out of the Southern Metropolitan Regional Office. At the end of 1992, fairly jaded by the system, I took Jeff Kennett’s package and finished my teaching career at Lang Lang P.S., as vice principal, to grow raspberries on our small farm at Lang Lang. This was shaping to be a very successful venture until a root fungus, obviously present when we bought the government certified canes, wiped out our whole crop.
Although retired from full-time teaching, I have spent the years since 1993 as a ‘jack-of-all-trades, master of none’ , earning my keep through many skills including a couple of stints at part-time classroom music teaching, school bus driving and dog breeding and grooming, having bred and shown Miniature Schnauzers for 20 years. For five years I was part of the Responsible Pet Education Program which involved me and one of my dogs visiting primary schools and kindergartens teaching children and parents about responsible pet ownership and dog safety.
However, my husband and I are fully retired now having sold our farm in Lang Lang. We bought an acre block and built a new house at Seaspray on the 90 Mile Beach where we enjoy the beautiful views of the ocean, gardening, walking along the beach and fishing. We have four wonderful grandchildren; the oldest has just turned 21 and the youngest is almost 17. We are a very close family and enjoy family get-togethers on regular occasions. Now that the house has been completed, I am ready to get back to playing golf. We also love to get away in our caravan, as Grey Nomads, exploring the great outdoors and the outback.
